Pope's January Prayer Intention: Christian Unity

For the month of January, Pope Francis has proposed to pray for the unity of all Christians.

Every year, the week of prayer dedicated to the unity of Christians is celebrated from January 18 to 25.

This week of united prayer with all Christian confessions for the same intention was created in 1908 at the proposal of an Anglican priest, Paul Watson, who later joined the Catholic faith. Thus, this initiative was promoted to which Orthodox Christians and Catholics have both joined.

Pope's February prayer intention: Praying for the most forgotten

For the month of February, Pope Francis proposes to pray for the marginalized, refugees, poor people, and the excluded, so that "they find welcome and support in our communities."

He especially calls for those marginalized in the big cities among thousands of people, businesses, shopping malls and large buildings.

The Pope invites everyone to not abandon people, and does so through this interesting video: It is a mannequin challenge in reverse. The protagonists remain immobile to the suffering of a poor person, but they change their attitude and quickly set out to help them.

Pope's prayer intentions for March: Help Persecuted Christians

According to Open Doors, every month there are 772 violent acts committed against Christians, 322 Christians killed for their beliefs, and 214 churches and places of worship destroyed.

During the month of March, the pope has expressed his desire for the world to join him in praying for those Christians who are persecuted around the globe and are forced to leave their home and families to find safety.

With his question, "How many of you pray for persecuted Christians?” Pope Francis initiated a call to action to join him in prayer, especially during this month.

Prayer Intention for May: Pray for the Christians in Africa

For the month of May, Pope Francis proposes to pray for the African continent and its Christians.

In this month's video, the pope praises the rich cultural, intellectual and religious heritage of the continent. He also laments the wars that destroy those riches.

For this reason, he invites Christians from all over the world to pray for "our brothers and sisters of this great continent, and pray together that Christians in Africa, in imitation of the Merciful Jesus, may give prophetic witness to reconciliation, justice, and peace."

Pope's June prayer intention: To eliminate arms trade

Pope Francis has published his prayer video for the month, asking others to join him in his intention for June: the elimination of arms trade.

He says it is impossible to speak of peace while national leaders are promoting and participating in arms trade throughout the world.

The pope also asks if "this war or that war really is a war to solve problems or if it is a commercial war for selling weapons in illegal trade so that the merchants of death get rich?”

He especially prays for the innocent victims who are the targets of so much of this violence.

Pope's July intention: those distant from the Christian faith

For the month of July, Pope Francis is extending his prayers out to those who are distant from the Christian faith, especially those without the Christian virtues of hope and joy.

He says, "When a Christian becomes sad, it means that he has distanced himself from Jesus. But then we must not leave him alone! We should offer him Christian hope-with our words, yes, but more with our testimony, with our freedom, with our joy.”

He especially remembers those who have strayed from the faith, hoping they can "rediscover the beauty of Christian life.”

Pope's August prayer intention: for artists to help expose the beauty of Creation

For the month of August, Pope Francis proposes that the world pray for the artists of our time and their works of art. Above all, he hopes that they can help transmit the beauty of creation.

Therefore, in the video created to spread his prayer intention for this month, writers, painters and musicians from all continents can be seen while united nature.

"The arts give expression to the beauty of the faith and proclaim the Gospel message of the grandeur of God's creation. When we admire a work of art or a marvel of nature, we discover how everything speaks to us of Him and of his love," says the pope.

Therefore, it invites us to ask for the artists of our time, so through their creativity they "may help us discover the beauty of creation."

Pope's Intention for September: For parishes to be close to the people

For the month of September, Pope Francis sends a direct message to parishes and asks all Christians to pray so that they may be "houses where the door is always open."

He asks for prayers so they do not become "simple offices" but that "animated by a missionary spirit, may be places where faith is communicated and charity is seen." The video highlights this spirit by demonstrating how Christians leaving a parish can be attentive to the needs of their surrounding neighbors.

In September 2015, Pope Francis followed a similar theme when he asked European parishes to each host a refugee family.

Pope Francis' October prayer intention is for the dignity and respect of workers

During the month of October the pope asks Christians not to forget to pray for the protection of the rights and dignity of all workers.

This is one of the themes the pontiff has spoken about on several occasions throughout his pontificate. Pope Francis is not oblivious to the drama of unemployment rates that in recent years has exceeded 20 percent in some countries.

"We should always remember the dignity and rights of those who work, condemn situations in which that dignity and those rights are violated, and help to ensure authentic progress by man and society," the pope said in the video.

Pope Francis asks for prayer for Asian Christians in November

During the month of November, Pope Francis asks, “Let us pray that Christians in Asia may promote dialogue, peace and mutual understanding, especially with those of other religions.”

The pope says that working on dialogue “is an essential part of the Church's mission in Asia.” Given that Christianity represents the minority on this continent, Pope Francis considers it an “exciting challenge.”

Asia accounts for 12 percent of all Christians. There are 141 million Catholics in its 48 countries, and in some regions – such as China, North Korea and certain areas of the Philippines – practicing Catholicism means increased risks and persecution.
